Where Does the Name Muumi Baby Come From?
Muumi is the Finnish name for the beloved characters created by Tove Jansson, internationally known as Moomins. Tove Jansson wrote her first book in 1945 during the war, channeling her energy into the magical world of the Moomins. Her first book, "The Moomins and the Great Flood", tells the story of the Moomin family searching for a safe place to call home – a touching story about friendship, acceptance, and the need for security.
Raimo Nuortie, the founder of Muumi Baby, saw many parallels between the values in these stories and what he wanted for his company: equality, tolerance, and respect for nature. These values are still reflected in Muumi diapers today.

From Muumi Baby to Moomin Baby – Why the Name Change?
The transition from Muumi Baby to Moomin Baby is actually a small change. Tove Jansson's Moomin characters are loved worldwide and represent values like respect for nature, equality, and tolerance – values that align perfectly with Moomin Baby’s mission.
Since demand for these skin-friendly, eco-friendly diapers is increasing internationally, it was time for a brand name that is universally recognizable. Moomin Baby is a natural evolution that preserves the Finnish roots and core values of the brand while making it more accessible for a global audience.
Are the Muumi Diapers Changing? What Stays the Same?
Although the name is changing, the diapers that parents know and trust remain exactly the same. Here’s what does not change:
- Skin-friendly – Free from harmful substances, fragrances, and unnecessary chemicals. Perfect for sensitive baby skin.
- Sustainable – Made with respect for the environment, using only renewable energy.
- CO₂-neutral – The entire life cycle of the diaper, from raw materials to transport, is climate-neutral.
- Made in Finland – Still produced in the same trusted factory in southern Finland, with craftsmanship and dedication.
The only noticeable differences are the new name on the packaging and an updated design that improves visibility and recognition of different diaper sizes and types.
What Does the Name Change Mean for Parents Using Muumi Diapers?
For loyal Moomin Baby users, very little will change. The diapers remain just as reliable and skin-friendly as before – only the name and packaging have been updated.
The new packaging design makes it easier to identify different sizes:
- Muumi Baby Size 1 and Size 2 for newborns now feature a yellow print.
- Moomin Baby diapers are now light red, while the walker sizes are light blue.
For parents who prioritize sustainability, Moomin Baby remains a leader in eco-friendly baby care, with diapers made using renewable energy, CO₂-neutral production, and recycled packaging.
A Family Business With a Mission – Muumi Baby Then, Moomin Baby Now!
The Muumi Baby story began in 1979 when Raimo Nuortie, a father and paper industry expert, was dissatisfied with the diaper options available for his son Oskari. His son had sensitive skin, and existing diapers did not meet his standards. So, Raimo decided to create a diaper that was both skin-friendly and eco-friendly – the first Muumi diaper.
This led to the creation of a family business that has grown into a pioneer in sustainable baby products.
