Sustainable Detergent Tested: Eco Egg

In January, we asked our community who would like to test our sustainable detergent, the Eco Egg, for us. In this blog, you can read what our five testers thought of it. Together, we can see how we can take another step closer to planet-friendly living.

At Grace is Green, we love hearing your opinion! That’s why this time, 5 members of our community tested our sustainable detergent: the Eco Egg! After testing this sustainable detergent, the results are in, and we’ve summed them up for you in this blog.

How environmentally friendly is this sustainable detergent?

This sustainable detergent, the Eco Egg, is working hard to be as eco-friendly as possible in every way – from packaging to reducing plastic and saving detergent bottles. Here’s what our testers thought:

Caroline de Mooij: The outer packaging is made of cardboard and can be recycled with paper waste. No unnecessary packaging materials are used, as the instructions can be followed via a QR code. The Eco Egg is sustainable because the pellets inside the egg can be used up to 70 times and are refillable.

Nienke Dijkstra: It lasts a long time, making it cost-effective, and it saves you from lugging around heavy bottles or boxes of detergent. By using this product, you reduce plastic waste: no plastic bottles, and the egg lasts forever. Plus, there are no microplastics in the detergent itself, which some other detergents do contain. Another plus: you’re not adding chemicals to the water when washing, so you’re not polluting the water, water treatment facilities, or sewage systems. That’s why the Eco Egg is also safe to use with a reed bed or independent biological wastewater treatment system.

Megan Vermaas: I think it's a great, creative alternative to standard detergent, which causes a lot of unnecessary plastic waste.

Samantha Peeters: I love washing with the Eco Egg. No more carrying around heavy bottles!

How clean does your laundry actually get with this eco-friendly detergent?

The Eco Egg works a little differently than regular detergent. No liquid components, but washing pellets instead! The white ones provide a natural cleaning power, while the black tourmaline pellets reduce surface tension.

Caroline de Mooij: The laundry comes out of the washing machine clean and feels "soft".

Nienke Dijkstra: It works – your clothes get clean. And they smell nice, even if you hang them to dry indoors, it smells like they’ve been dried outside (I think I had the Linen scent).

Coby: The laundry came out nice and clean.

Megan Vermaas: My laundry came out of the machine clean. I washed dirty dishcloths and towels, and they came out fresh. The product does what it promises.

Samantha Peeters: It cleans our clothes well, is better for the environment, and is gentler on our skin.

How easy is this sustainable detergent to use?

The Eco Egg works slightly differently from regular detergent:

  • Open the egg and fill it with the included washing pellets (both the white and black pellets – they work as a team!).
  • Place the laundry egg in the drum of your washing machine. One egg is enough for 7-8 kg of laundry.
  • Make sure the washing machine isn’t too full – the egg needs space to move around.
  • The pellets inside the laundry egg last for 70 washes. That makes it a truly sustainable detergent!

The instructions can be viewed via a QR code or here.

Reviews of using the Eco Egg:

Caroline de Mooij: The instructions are clear and easy to follow. The Eco Egg is simple to use – you just place it in the washing machine and take it out afterward to dry.

Nienke Dijkstra: Filling and refilling it is easy. It took me a moment to get used to the button, but it’s much easier than the previous version, which had screws. The pellets fit easily inside, which is helpful.

Megan Vermaas: Opening the egg was okay but not very smooth. The instructions on how to fill the egg with the pellets were a bit unclear, so I just followed the pictures – and that worked fine. Closing the egg, however, was very easy.

Coby: I didn’t find the user manual very clear, and opening the egg wasn’t that easy either. I think older people might struggle with this. Then I put the pellets inside and made sure to close the egg properly (which was quite a task).

Samantha Peeters: The instructions were a little unclear. I added all the fragrance pellets at once, which I later realized I shouldn’t have done. Instead, I should have added new fragrance pellets gradually.

Which version of the Eco Egg was the favorite?

The Eco Egg comes in three variations: Fragrance Free (unscented and hypoallergenic!), Linen (a light fresh scent), and Fresh Blossom (a subtle floral scent). Our testers tried different versions of this sustainable detergent – here’s what they thought:

Caroline de Mooij: The laundry was scent-free and caused no skin irritation, whereas I do have that issue with some liquid detergents. (Used Fragrance Free)

Nienke Dijkstra: It works – your laundry gets clean. And it smells nice! Even when drying indoors, it smells like it was hung outside (I think I had the Linen scent).

Megan Vermaas: The packaging looked promising, but the smell coming from the box was very strong and overpowering (I chose the pink Spring Blossom egg). Still, I decided to try it to see if the scent would still be intense after washing. Luckily, the scent faded a lot and wasn’t as noticeable anymore. (Used Spring Blossom)

Coby: The scent outside the washing machine was very strong and not my preference. However, after washing, there was barely any scent left, and after using the dryer, there was no scent at all. (Used Spring Blossom)

Samantha Peeters: “I added all the fragrance pellets at once. In hindsight, I should have added new ones gradually. After a few washes, the scent really starts to fade. I can imagine that this might put some people off. If it was clearly indicated that you shouldn’t add all the fragrance pellets at once, I think more people would be convinced to try the Eco Egg.”

And… what did you think of this sustainable detergent?

Caroline de Mooij: The Eco Egg is cheaper than traditional detergent. If you’re unsure, definitely give it a try! I won’t use any other method of washing again. (Used Fragrance Free, 100% perfume-free and hypoallergenic)

Nienke Dijkstra: In short: it’s good for you, your laundry, and the planet. And that’s important and necessary in today’s world. (Used the lightly scented Fresh Linen version)

Megan Vermaas: I found the initial scent very strong, and after reading the ingredients list, I noticed that the product does contain perfume. Personally, I prefer to avoid that in my detergent, so for that reason, I wouldn’t purchase it again. (Used the scented version Spring Blossom)

From customer reviews of the Fresh Linen scent, we’ve read that the fragrance is subtle and fades quickly.

Coby: The egg didn’t make noise in the washing machine, which I saw as a plus. However, I wouldn’t buy this product in a store, mainly because of the scent. I like my laundry to smell fresh, and I missed that with this product. (Used Spring Blossom)

Samantha Peeters: It cleans our laundry well, is better for the environment, and is gentle on our skin. This is really important to us since both my daughter and I have sensitive skin. In other words – we’re really happy with it!(Used Fresh Linen)
