Washing your period underwear in 5 simple steps - hand wash or washing machine
How to wash your period underwear manually or in the washing machine in 5 simple steps. How to ensure you always have fresh period underwear and choose the right program, for example.
Washing period underwear, how do you do it? Whether you choose to hand wash your period underwear or use a washing machine, we've laid it out for you in 5 simple steps!
Handwashing your period underwear
Handwashing comes in handy when you don't have enough period underwear for your entire cycle. This way, you still have fresh period underwear, but you don't have to do small loads of laundry frequently, which is more environmentally friendly!
Step 1: Rinse it under the tap
Start by cleaning your period underwear under cold water. Rinse the menstrual blood out of the underwear and gently squeeze out the absorbent part.
Tip: If rinsing immediately isn't possible, store it in a convenient wetbag until you get home. Wetbags are odor and leak-proof, perfect for work or a day out.
Step 2: Hand wash with cold water and neutral soap
Fill a basin with cold water and add neutral soap. Wash the underwear by hand in this solution.
Step 3: Thoroughly rinse and gently squeeze out
Make sure all soap residues are well rinsed out. Then, gently squeeze the water out of the underwear. Gently squeeze out the absorbent part, for example, do not wring it out too hard, as this causes unnecessary wear and tear.
Step 4: Let it dry
Lay the washed underwear flat to dry on a rack or hang it up. Keep in mind that it may take 12 to 24 hours to dry completely. The rule of thumb is, the greater the absorbency of your underwear, the longer it takes to dry completely.
Step 5: Ready for use!
Now your period underwear is ready for use again!
Tip: If you choose to wash in between, make sure you have enough period underwear for at least 2 days. This way, you can wear it one day and wash and dry it the next day!
Period underwear in the washing machine
Although handwashing is a good alternative for in-between, we recommend washing period underwear in the washing machine at the end of your cycle for a deeper clean.
Step 1: Clean under the tap
Just like with handwashing, start by rinsing the period underwear under cold water. Rinse the menstrual blood out of the underwear and gently squeeze out the absorbent part.
Tip: If rinsing immediately isn't possible, store it in a convenient wetbag until you get home. Wetbags are odor and leak-proof, perfect for work or a day out.
Step 2: Use a laundry bag
Place the period underwear in a laundry bag before putting it in the washing machine to protect it.
Step 3: Select the right washing programme
Set the washing machine to a programme with a low number of spins, such as the delicate or gentle wash programme.
Note: Check the label of your specific period underwear to choose the right temperature. This is often 40 or 30 degrees or even colder. Not sure? Opt for a cold wash programme instead, as this also cleans the underwear well! And you'll save some energy too.
Step 4: Avoid fabric softener
Do not use fabric softener when washing period underwear to maintain its absorbency.
Step 5: Let it dry and store
After washing, let the underwear dry for 12 to 24 hours before storing it for your next menstrual cycle.
Tip: If you have insufficient drying space, most period underwear can also be dried in the dryer at low temperatures using a delicate programme. Check the label of your specific period underwear to see if it is suitable for the dryer!
